Dubai: A Year-Round Pedestrian-Friendly City

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the Dubai Walk Master Plan, a visionary project aimed at transforming Dubai into a pedestrian-friendly city. The initiative focuses on creating a 6,500 km interconnected network of walkways by 2040, including 3,300 km of new paths, 2,300 km of upgraded existing walkways, and over 900 km planned beyond 2040. The plan aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and Quality of Life Strategy 2033, aiming to enhance pedestrian mobility from 13% to 25%.

Key Features

  • Enhanced Connectivity: 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses link key areas and landmarks such as Burj Khalifa and Dubai Marina.
  • Unique Walkways: Pathways with shaded areas, misting systems, interactive screens, greenery, and art displays will integrate with each area's identity.
  • Innovative Designs: Projects like "The Future Loop" near the Museum of the Future will feature elevated, air-conditioned walkways connecting major landmarks.

The plan promotes active lifestyles, safety, and accessibility while fostering collaboration with strategic partners and youth for innovative infrastructure. It includes models for urban spaces like plazas, superblocks, and boulevards, transforming streets into pedestrian zones.

Pilot Phase and Stages

  • Pilot phase (2025–2027): Initial implementation in key areas.
  • Full rollout by 2040: Includes scenic walkways, city connectivity paths, and community trails.

Supporting Technology

A smart app will provide users with route information, track walking data, and offer rewards for distances walked. It integrates navigation systems, highlighting features like rest areas and art displays.

The Dubai Walk Master Plan reflects Dubai’s ambition to position itself as one of the world’s healthiest, most sustainable cities, enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
