Mudon's Winter Readiness: A Proactive Approach to Rain Challenges

With winter approaching and the promise of wetter weather, Mudon has implemented a robust crisis management plan to prepare the community for potential rainfall challenges. Following the initial announcement in August 2024, several proactive measures have been set into motion to manage rainwater effectively and protect residents.

1. Reinforcement with Sand Bunds

To prevent water from overflowing into the community from the nearby RTA road, a 1.2-kilometer sand bund has been established along critical buffer zones. This bund acts as a protective barrier, stopping excess water from reaching lower areas in the community, especially Arabella. To ensure it remains effective throughout the season, this bund is inspected regularly and reinforced as needed with specialized equipment.

2. Establishment of Additional Discharge Zones

In anticipation of heavy rainfall, new discharge areas have been designated within the community. These zones will serve as temporary lagoons, capable of holding large volumes of rainwater. By setting aside these areas for water storage, Mudon can quickly manage sudden rain accumulation and prevent it from pooling in residential zones.

3. Clearing the Stormwater Network

Maintaining a clear stormwater network is vital to ensuring effective drainage. Mudon has initiated a thorough clearance operation, focusing on cleaning all stormwater manholes and gully traps. This work is ongoing and will be updated as progress continues, ensuring the drainage network remains fully operational throughout the season.

4. Collaboration on Dewatering with RTA

In partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Mudon has developed a strategic dewatering plan. This plan involves diverting stormwater to a designated lagoon area across the E611 road, with preparatory work already underway. Expected to be finalized by the end of the year, this project ensures a reliable outlet for excess water.

5. A Dedicated Crisis Management Team

A trained crisis management team is on standby to address any rain-related emergencies that may arise. This team is prepared to respond promptly to incidents, mitigating the impact of rainwater on the community's infrastructure and ensuring the safety of residents.

6. Detailed Flood Mitigation Action Plan

Mudon’s emergency flood mitigation plan incorporates continuous rain forecast monitoring and the pre-purchase of essential equipment and materials. Pumps and tankers have been strategically deployed to key hotspot locations, ready to remove water in high-risk areas.

Identified hotspots across the community will receive special attention, with measures to open gullies and manholes in collaboration with relevant authorities as needed. Throughout the season, these areas will be closely monitored to manage water levels effectively and minimize the risk of localized flooding.

Mudon’s comprehensive approach reflects a commitment to safeguarding residents from rain-related disruptions and creating a more resilient community. Through ongoing improvements and proactive planning, Mudon is ready to handle the winter season’s challenges while ensuring residents feel safe and secure.
