Dubai Metro Blue Line Construction Begins, Promising Faster Commutes by 2029

Key Takeaways:

  • The Dubai Metro Blue Line, a new 30 km route with 14 stations, is officially under construction.

  • It will connect Dubai Creek Harbour, Festival City, Academic City, and Mirdif to the rest of the metro network.

  • Expected to serve 200,000+ daily riders once operational in 2029.

  • The project supports Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan and sustainable mobility goals.

A Major Leap in Urban Connectivity

Dubai is expanding its world-class public transport system with the launch of the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a strategic addition that aims to improve east–west connectivity and ease congestion on roads leading to emerging residential and commercial districts.

Announced by the RTA (Roads and Transport Authority), the project officially broke ground in early 2024, with full operations expected by 2029. It is among the most ambitious infrastructure undertakings since the original Red and Green lines opened in 2009 and 2011.

Route Overview: What Areas Will It Serve?

The 30 km Blue Line will include:

  • 14 stations, including 3 interchange stations connecting to existing Red and Green lines.

  • Half underground, including deep tunnel segments under Dubai Creek.

  • Key stations in:

    • Dubai Creek Harbour

    • Dubai Festival City

    • Academic City

    • Mirdif

    • International City

    • Al Rashidiya (interchange)

The route is designed to connect high-growth residential and academic areas to the core business districts, with end-to-end travel time expected to be under 30 minutes.

Ridership and Economic Impact

RTA estimates that the Blue Line will serve over 200,000 passengers daily at full capacity. This will:

  • Ease pressure on highways like Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road

  • Increase real estate value in newly connected districts like Mirdif Hills and Academic City

  • Support Dubai’s aim of 25% public transport share by 2030

The line is expected to stimulate transit-oriented development, with mixed-use communities and business zones growing around metro hubs.

A Key Pillar of the 2040 Urban Master Plan

The Blue Line aligns with the broader Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which prioritizes:

  • Sustainable mobility

  • Reduced traffic emissions

  • Smarter city infrastructure

  • Balanced growth between old and new districts

The project also supports Dubai’s net-zero strategy, with solar-powered stations and electric feeder buses expected to be part of the integrated system.
